Thread whirling–also called thread peeling–is used in the manufacture of threads with a high length-to-diameter ratio. A particular advantage of thread whirling is that materials which are difficult to clamp can be worked with small tolerances. Therefore, whirling is frequently used for manufacturing bone screws out of titanium or stainless steel.
