Drilling is a machining operation through the removal of cuttings. Using a drill that is turned around its longitudinal axis and pressed against the work piece, a circular hole is produced: the bore. The drill generally has two cutting edges that peel away cuttings from the work piece using rotary movement and axial pressure. As a rule, these are transported out of the bore through helical grooves.
