centerless grinding

Centerless Grinding

Centerless grinding or tipless round grinding is a special form of external circular grinding wherein the work piece is not clamped but rather placed on a guide with a wedge-shaped cross-section. This guide is positioned parallel to the axis between the grinding disk and the control disk. As a result, the work piece lies both on the ruler and on the slowly rotating control disk. This consists of a mixture of rubber and corundum and is used to press the work piece against the rapidly rotating grinding disk, at the same time slowing it to maintain a rotational speed that parallels that of the control disk. In this way the grinding disk is able to remove material.
